Lung Capacity Andew McPhail, Lisa Lipton, Vincent Chevalier September 16 – November 5, 2011 Opening Reception: September 16, 7pm Lung Capacity is a full gallery installation including work by Andrew McPhail, Lisa Lipton and Vincent Chevalier. The artists in the exhibition explore issues of identity and mortality while stretching the boundaries of disclosure. Two single word sculptures by Andrew McPhail hang in the main space. “Sissy,” constructed of bedazzled silver and gold dollar store finds, is a reclamation piece. The second explores McPhail’s HIV positive status. In Not My Fault, “Sorry” is written with medical gloves. Stark and honest, the piece inverts the usual placement of guilt within an apology. So... when did you figure out that you had AIDS? is a single channel video consisting of home video footage recorded when Chevalier was 13 years old. In the home video, he plays the role of "a man dying from AIDS" on a mock television talk show. Mounting this footage in a gallery, Chevalier explores the boundaries of art practice and privacy. Lisa Lipton’s You Can Take My Bicycle is a multimedia piece including a knitted wearable grandfather costume, a stationary bike and two video works. In performance, the wearer pedals the bicycle that powers projections signifying memory recollection during the final stages of life.
